Its a sect. He left his prior sect and joined this one. The reason he doesn't want to leave is of course the benefits of being a member a powerful sect. As such, so long as he can prove himself, the sect can provide resources he can't get on his own. From cultivation techniques, battle skills, magic weapons and equipment, alchemy pills as well as just having the backing of a large sect when out and about adventuring. In addition there may be sect missions that carry significant rewards as well as getting access to information about secret realms that may open up nearby. In short, he will stay there till he is more powerful than the sect and or there is no benefit to remaining there.
